Genesis Expands Its Board

The Genesis Board is beginning this new 2026-20267 fiscal year with a larger leadership team.

Following approval by Temple Beth Emeth and St. Clare’s, the board has expanded from eight to ten voting members. The change reflects the growing scope of Genesis’s work and brings additional experience to the board as it oversees our shared facility.

The expansion has been under discussion for several years. In recent years Genesis’ work has become increasingly complex. Long-term capital planning has grown more sophisticated, staff oversight has expanded, community events have returned, and new communications initiatives have been undertaken alongside ongoing work in security, sustainability, and building operations.

The board’s expansion reflects a broader recognition that Genesis needs more people involved—not only as board members, but also on the committees that carry much of the organization’s work forward.

We’re pleased to welcome three new members who began their terms on July 1 and who participate in their first board meeting this week.

Reed Newland

Reed Newland joins the board representing Temple Beth Emeth. A TBE member since 2001, Reed recently retired after a 42-year career practicing corporate and international law. Raised in the Episcopal Church before joining TBE and seeing two of his children become b’nei mitzvah, Reed brings a perspective shaped by both of Genesis’s founding congregations.

Cathy Stone

Cathy Stone joins the board from St. Clare’s. Since retiring as an AAPS elementary school teacher, Cathy has devoted herself to volunteer work. A member of St. Clare’s since 2004 and a former Senior Warden, Cathy brings many years of leadership and service to Genesis, including serving on the building committee.

Sarah Barbrow

Sarah Barbrow joins the board as St. Clare’s liaison, succeeding Mark David-Craig in that role. Sarah joined St. Clare’s in 2023 after returning to Ann Arbor with her family from the Boston area. She serves on the Vestry and works as a librarian at the University of Michigan.

We’re delighted to welcome Reed, Cathy, and Sarah and look forward to the contributions they’ll make as Genesis continues to grow and evolve.

Expanding the board is one of the ways Genesis is adapting to changing needs. Much of the organization’s work happens through committees and volunteers who contribute their time, skills, and ideas throughout the year.
