A Gift of Comfort and Connection: Our Journey to New Sanctuary Chairs

For many years, the idea of replacing the sanctuary chairs quietly remained on Genesis’ wish list. While essential infrastructure needs—like the fire alarm system and HVAC repairs—rightfully took precedence, the vision for a refreshed, welcoming worship space never faded. Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor, the dream of new chairs from “someday” to “soon,” can be realized and we are filled with gratitude.

Why Chairs are Important
Our sanctuary chairs hold us during life’s most sacred moments—celebrations, losses, music, reflection, prayer, and fellowship. The donor recognized that these chairs are more than seating; they are part of the spiritual and emotional foundation of our community. With this beautiful act of generosity, we’ve embarked on a process that honors that understanding.
Step One: Selecting the Chairs

After reviewing several models and trying out samples, the Genesis Design Committee selected the 20” wide Sauder SE model—the same trusted model used in the TBE chapel. To ensure inclusivity and comfort for all, a number of chairs with arms will also be ordered. We were able to place the initial order before a scheduled price increase, maximizing the impact of the donation.
Step Two: Choosing the Right Fabric
Comfort is only part of the story—beauty matters, too. Committee members explored countless fabric samples to find a look and feel that will complement the sanctuary’s spirit and design. After a thoughtful process, a set of finalists has emerged that harmonize with the space.
Step Three: Rethinking the Pew Cushions
In evaluating fabric options, a question arose: should the choice of new chair fabric be limited by having to coordinate with aging pew cushions that have clearly seen decades of use? It was decided that new pew cushions would also be included in this project—ensuring a cohesive and refreshed look throughout the sanctuary.
Step Four: Enhancing the Bimah
The Committee also turned its attention to seating on the Bimah. After careful research, two elegant and practical options were identified.
Step Five: Community Consultation
This process has involved ongoing consultation with Temple Beth Emeth, St. Clare’s, and Genesis leadership. A final review meeting with Rabbi Josh, Rev. Anne, and other key staff will take place shortly to confirm the remaining design decisions.
Step Six: A Time for Patience
Once the order is finalized, there will be a wait while chairs are custom upholstered and pew cushions fabricated and installed. During that time, updates will be shared with the community. We are also exploring responsible ways to rehome the 125+ existing sanctuary chairs, ensuring they continue to serve others.
This transformation would not be possible without the vision and generosity of our donor. Their gift is not just about furniture—it’s about hospitality, dignity, and the sacred experience of gathering together.
We look forward to welcoming you into a refreshed space that reflects the spirit of our community and the deep care that sustains it.
With gratitude,
The Genesis Design Committee
